When
I look out my window now, there is no doubt that fall is well underway
and winter is just beyond the next horizon, waiting its turn to sweep
in and cover the earth with a white blanket of snow.
Brown
leaves on the ground remind me that I haven't raked up the leaves that
have fallen from the bare trees in the yard. Better get to that or I
will be raking them next spring.
My knees
have been aching more than usual for this time of year. They make
movement difficult and I have had to curtail my walking until the
swelling recedes enough to allow me to resume my hiking.
Good things come in small packages,
and this guy is no exception. Nicknamed Rupert, this deer is alive
with the assistance of some very caring people.

more of Rupert. Reader Marie Tighe sent me this story.
The 2008 Redneck Award Winners
Once
again, we've come to that time of
year when we acknowledge that certain of our kind are destined to be
given prizes for their, um, unique presentation of ideas and form.

NEW
PRICE!!

Rent
this Gowganda house!
Fishermen and
snowmobilers take note: this house is available year round for rent.
Click on the above picture for more information.
Finally, I have sorted
my photographs and have compiled a DVD of my trek.

above for details on how you can obtain a copy.

Listed below are two blog sites that
may be of interest to readers.

The first one above is
authored by Bill Fox, a Gowganda resident who likes to hike and make
canoe trips around the countryside. He always takes along a camera to
capture the sights of these excursions. Bill tries to post a message
and a few pictures every day. Those wishing to watch winter unfold in
the far reaches of Northern Ontario will delight in this blog.
The next blog is writen
by Scott Dietz, a fellow I met in Skamania Washington, at the home of
my friend Bernadette Price.

Scott's home is in
Portland, Oregon and his pictures feature the rivers and mountains of
the Pacific Northwest. Scott's choice of travel is by kayak on his
adventures. His writing style is interesting and complements the
wonderful pictures he posts.
Future issues of this
newsletter will show these links in my normal Links section to the left.
I hope you will enjoy
reading both these blogs and looking at the great pictures posted there.

The destructive power of
lightning is
well known and documented. Still, there is a raw beauty to lightning
that draws people to it, that momentary flash in the darkness that
lights up the world around it.
Here are some photos
taken of lightning strikes. Hope you like them. Click on the photo to
view them.
Beginning on the
Thursday of Canada's Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Idaho and Montana
were hit with a snowstorm that lasted through to the Sunday.
The heavy wet snow took
down tree limbs and telephone and power lines. My friends in Billings
Montana, Ginger and JR Maxwell, lost power only momentarily but a big
tree branch came to rest on wires at the side of their house, requiring
professional removal..
Here in Gowganda, on
Thanksgiving weekend, it was sunny and warm, but that's another story
told further down this page.
JR sent me a few
photos. Click the picture for more.
Oh, what a weekend Thanksgiving was.
Temperatures soared and the sun shone like it was summertime. The
trees, however, belied this thought as they were quite fall-like in
appearance.
above and see what I mean.
Former Gowganda resident, Bernadette
Price, known fondly to many of us, recently visited Mount Hood in
Oregon and sent me this photo.
It was with her and
husband Keith that I visited the mountain in January 2008. On that day
it was snow-covered completely, hiding a glacier below, which is
clearly visible in summer.
Take a look at her photo of Mount Hood on 18 October 2008. Spectacular.
This poppy is a reminder that in
November we honour our veterans who
have served in times of war so that we continue to enjoy the freedom
and lifestyle to which we have become accustomed.
Take a minute on 11
November wherever you are to remember them and the ultimate sacrifice
so many of them made on our behalf.
Another issue finished and a few more
jobs done. The leaves will just have to wait. :>)
Don't
forget to go see the pictures posted on my home page. They are current
and won't be seen anywhere else at other times. I've also posted links
to the two slide shows showing aerial shots of old and new Gowganda
there.
I
hope you enjoy this offering. Please feel free to write me with your
comments. Without you, there would be no newsletter so please continue
to send in your articles for possible publication.
See you here next month!
